LETTERS TO SANTA
From the Deseret News, Dear Santa is a wonderful collection of letters written by kids in the late 18oos and early 1900s.
Valentine Davies’s Miracle on 34th Street (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2010), originally written in 1947, features disillusioned Doris Walker, her six-year-old daughter Susan, Fred, the handsome young attorney who lives next door, a feud between Macy’s and Gimbel’s, and a wonderful old man who just might be Santa Claus. Proof of the power of letters to Santa and a lovely read for ages 8 and up.
My pick of the Miracle on 34th Street movies is the 1947 original, with Maureen O’Hara, Edmund Gwenn, and a very young Natalie Wood. Rated G. (Forget the 1994 remake. It skips the Santa Claus letters.) |
